Welcome to Year 1!

Mrs Sherley

Years 1 and 2 are taught by Mrs Sherley and supported by Mrs Witty

We provide fruit every day but if you wish to provide your own healthy snack that is fine. Please note we are a nut-free school.

Please bring a named water bottle every day.

Please use Dojo to ask any questions or if you have any concerns. No question is a silly question.

We go outside in all weather so please make sure your child has appropriate clothing.

A book bag is preferable to a rucksack as we have bags in the classroom to help with changing reading books.

Please make sure that reading books and diaries come in daily as we listen to children read in class too.

Please provide a pair of wellie boots to be kept in school.

EVERYTHING IS TO BE CLEARLY NAMED PLEASE!

Reading

Your child will come home with x3 reading books a week. They will be changed every Thursday. 1 = their RWI Phonics Storybook which they would have spent the week learning to read. This helps the children with their reading FLUENCY. 2 = a DECODABLE RWI Phonics book. These match and mirror the storybook they have been learning in their phonics lesson. This is unknown to them so they need to work hard on their decoding skills. 3 = a library book. Reading for pleasure is something really special and the children are encouraged to choose ANY book they wish from the library.

probing questions

Year 1 do not have weekly set homework but they are expected to read and learn/practice red words (tricky words) daily. Please see below a list of useful questions you could ask your child when reading with them to help develop their understanding

Year 1’s Big 6

These books have been carefully selected for our Year 1 children as a range of excellent texts that you will enjoy sharing with your child.
